Sapphire has excellent mechanical and optical properties. It is extremely hard (9 on the mohs scale) and has a strength which is retained even at elevated temperature. In addition, it is resistant to virtually all forms of chemical attack. It has a transmission band which extends from the UV at around 180 nm, throughout the visible and near to mid infrared regions to 6500 nm.
